This is a work in progress that began in 2001, when I started researching the family history of a branch of the Kennedys. I have now gone back with reasonable certainty for seven generations, to the early Eighteenth Century and have little hope of getting much earlier. The material here is as accurate as I can make it, and I will welcome any corrections and additions. You will see that the story begins with the oldest post, so to read everything in correct order please scroll down.

Earliest recorded beginnings
The family described in this blog are part of a tribe which inhabited Donegal in the Fifth Century. They eventually migrated to Scotland and settled in Ayr before moving to Lochaber, probably in the early Sixteenth Century, for reasons that are obscure. There are various competing theories about this move, ranging from the possibility that they were exiled to their being sent to subdue some unruly members of the local population. Rather than going into detail here I commend the material posted by Iain Kennedy on his site www.kennedydna.com, which includes a lot of fascinating material about the origins of the family and its distribution.
